What Is UniqueDesignMilano?

A Milanese eye.
An independent spirit.

UniqueDesignMilano is a Milan-based independent eyewear design house, known through its UDM brand for distinctive shapes and considered details. Bright Side Optical carries UDM in Austin and helps you choose a pair that connects the design you love with the fit and lenses you need.

There is a particular kind of attraction that happens before you know a brand’s name. You see a shape and want a closer look. You turn a frame over and discover that its inside is as interesting as its front. You put it on, and something about your reflection feels more complete.

That is the conversation we want to have about UDM. The story begins with curiosity. The best part is discovering where it takes you.

A Different Starting Point

First, learn to notice.

The company’s current story places its founding in Milan in 2018, with Stefano Romanelli. He grew up between Milan and London, influenced by a grandfather who traveled in search of compelling objects for a London design shop.

Stefano entered eyewear without established connections in the industry. UDM became a way to bring that exploratory eye to something people wear every day.1

Imagine developing your taste that way: through places, objects, and the habit of looking again. A frame becomes an opportunity to bring a little of that curiosity into your own life.

We love that starting point. It gives us something richer to share than a recognizable name on a temple. There is a perspective behind the design, and room for your own perspective when you choose it.

The Faith of a Few

Good taste often begins with trusting your own eye.

The maker’s phrase, “The Faith of a Few,” expresses its belief in pursuing a vision with resilience and conviction.2 At Bright Side, we connect that idea to a smaller, very personal moment: giving yourself permission to try the glasses you keep looking back at.

You may already know what you love. You may need someone to pull an unexpected shape and say, “Let’s see.” We make space for both.

The Reward of a Closer Look

Some details are just for you.

A frame has more than one face. There is the outline everyone sees, and the smaller world you discover when you take it off: the hinge, the inside of a temple, the meeting of one material with another.

UDM’s Passport collection takes inspiration from architecture, including Mughal and Arabic design and Viennese Liberty. Its internal decoration and components carry those references into eyewear.3

Look at the photograph here. The folded temples reveal surfaces and lines that are easy to miss when the glasses are on. That extra moment of discovery is part of the pleasure.

At Bright Side, we want you to hold a frame, turn it over, and ask questions. A piece you will use every day deserves that attention. Understanding a detail can deepen the affection you already feel for the shape.

Craftsmanship You Can Explore

Character comes in different materials.

UDM offers more than one way to make an impression. The actual frame’s construction matters, so we look beyond the brand name to understand what you are trying on.

Acetate

Shape with presence.

The maker describes FRAME 51 as handmade in Italy, with 7 mm polished acetate, custom five-barrel hinges, a custom wire core, and double-milled temples.4

That gives us details to explore alongside the overall silhouette. A substantial outline can feel decisive and expressive; its scale and bridge still need to work on your face.

Titanium

A finer line of expression.

FRAME 55 is also listed as handmade in Italy. Its construction includes a 2.5 mm titanium eye rim, custom three-barrel hinges, and acetate temple tips.5

A metal shape can bring definition without the visual density of an acetate front. We look at the actual frame with your coloring, features, and prescription in mind.

Sunwear

The same eye for design, outside.

CERROJO38 shows another direction: an Italian-made acetate sunglass with custom seven-barrel hinges and a custom wire core.6

Sunwear gives you room to explore a different mood. We discuss whether the chosen design can work with your prescription, and which lens plan suits the way you use sunglasses.

These are examples from the maker’s range, not a current inventory list. Materials, dimensions, colors, and availability are confirmed for the model you select.

Find Your Version of UDM

Expressive does not have to mean oversized.

The FRAME 55 portrait is a useful reminder. Fine metal rims can have a clear point of view, too. Here, the rounded lenses and lifted outer line give the face a different expression from a broad, dark acetate shape.

When we style you, we look for that relationship. Does the frame bring attention to your eyes? Does its top line work with your brows? Does the color give you a lift? Does it feel like something you would reach for tomorrow morning?

You might love a confident acetate silhouette. You might prefer a precise titanium line. You might discover that your wardrobe has room for both.

The joy is in finding your version of the brand. We help you compare the effect of a few thoughtful choices, so you can recognize what makes one pair feel especially yours.

Why We Carry UniqueDesignMilano

We want your glasses to be a discovery.

We choose independent eyewear because it gives us something worth introducing to you. UDM brings curiosity, inventive details, and shapes with enough character to make the search enjoyable.

Carrying a collection like this asks us to have a point of view, too. We have to look closely, make choices, and be willing to show you something you might not have picked from a wall by yourself. That is part of the pleasure of a curated optical.

We want the discovery to feel personal. You might be dressing for a more visible role at work. You might have always loved design and want your glasses to reflect it. You might simply be ready to enjoy what you see in the mirror.

Our job is to translate that feeling into a complete pair: a shape that suits you, a comfortable fit, and lenses chosen for the way you see and live. A beautiful frame becomes more valuable to you when those decisions work together.

If you are considering progressives, explore why some progressive lenses cost more than others. The lens plan deserves the same care as the frame.
