What Is Blackfin?

Eyewear for people who notice the details.

Blackfin is an Italian eyewear maker known for titanium frames, precise construction, and distinctive color. Bright Side Optical carries Blackfin in Austin for people who want thoughtful design in glasses they can enjoy wearing throughout the day.

There is a particular pleasure in a well-made metal frame: the crisp edge of a shape, a fine line that lifts the face, the way a finish changes as you turn toward the light. Blackfin gives us room to explore those details with you.

You might fall for its quietest silhouette. You might choose a clear flash of color. Either way, the appeal becomes more interesting once you know the people and the place behind it.

A Family Workshop in the Dolomites

One place. Generations of knowledge.

1971

Maria Pramaor opens her workshop.

After nine years working in the eyewear industry, Maria Pramaor started her own frame-making business in Agordo. The company carried her name. That workshop became the foundation of the story behind Blackfin.

1991

The family chooses titanium.

Maria and her husband, Primo Del Din, began working with titanium to develop a distinctive direction. They sent technical specialists to Japan and established a department dedicated to understanding the material.1

The story makes the frame feel more personal. Someone made the decision to specialize, learn, and keep improving. At Bright Side, that commitment is part of what makes a collection worth introducing to you.

The Material Is Part of the Experience

Lightness you can appreciate every day.

Blackfin sources titanium from Japan and shapes it in Italy. Its technical work explores both pure titanium and more flexible beta-titanium, allowing different parts of a design to do different jobs.2

For a person who wears glasses from breakfast until bedtime, that is a compelling starting point. We want a frame whose presence on your face feels considered, with enough visual character to make you happy when you catch your reflection.

Very little material.

Titanium can support strong, fine structures. A slim metal profile can define the eyes while allowing more of your face to show. We look at whether that balance flatters you.

Flexible components.

Beta-titanium gives many Blackfin designs flexible temples. We still check how the actual frame sits and feels: a material’s properties are only part of a comfortable pair.

A complete lens plan.

Your prescription lenses contribute to the weight, too. We consider the frame’s size and geometry alongside the lens material and design, so the finished pair supports your daily life.

A Closer Look

Simple lines take serious work.

Look at this unfinished front. The bridge, rim, and outer corners have to work together before color or polish can transform the surface. A few changes in line can alter the entire expression of the finished glasses.

In the One collection, the front is developed from a single sheet of titanium. Other collections explore solid-block machining or different constructions. The method serves the design; it gives each line its own character.4

That is what makes a closer look rewarding. You can appreciate the outline as a small design object, then see how it changes when someone wears it. Our favorite part is helping you discover which version of that character feels right on your face.

Neomadeinitaly

The place and the people belong in the story.

Blackfin uses Neomadeinitaly to describe its commitment to Italian production, its people, and its home in the Dolomites. Its heritage remains rooted in the Agordo area.1

The Black Shelter factory gives those values a physical setting. The brand describes recyclable aluminum facades, electricity from photovoltaic and hydroelectric sources, and a workplace designed around employee comfort. The building holds CasaClimaWork&Life certification.3

Knowing where something is made can add another dimension to owning it. When you put on the frame, there is a real landscape and a community of makers behind those lines.

The Pleasure of Color

A precise frame can still be expressive.

Blackfin One uses hand-applied color, studied contrasts, and matte and polished surfaces to change the mood of a frame.4 A darker rim can draw a crisp line around the eyes. A contrasting edge can reveal itself when you turn. A lighter finish can feel more open on the face.

Black Edition takes another approach, pairing hand polishing with Nano-Plating for a thin metallic finish.8 The effect is a conversation between the shape and the light that falls across it.

At Bright Side, we consider color with your face and wardrobe in mind. The right choice might feel natural immediately, or it might surprise you. You can be drawn to a technically refined frame and still want something with warmth and personality.

The brand’s foundational collection explores titanium through varied shapes, hand-applied colors, and contrasts between matte and polished surfaces. This is a starting point if you want clean metal eyewear with visible personality.4

Architectural restraint

Atlantic incorporates its hinge and rim-lock mechanics into a 2 mm titanium front. The result is an uncluttered profile with a more defined presence. We would explore it with someone drawn to precise lines and a composed, modern look.5

Classics reconsidered

Pacific combines retro Japanese influences with a Californian sensibility. Fronts are milled from a solid titanium block, with soft details and understated finishes. Consider it if you appreciate familiar shapes interpreted with careful proportions and an elegant metal finish.6

Rimless, with intention

Blackfin Aero Loop

Aero Loop places its micro-hinge behind the lens attachment for a discreet profile. Options for lens shape and size, bridge size, temple design, and color make it a particularly interesting conversation for someone who wants the face to remain the focus.7

A more luminous finish

Blackfin Black Edition

Black Edition combines hand polishing with Nano-Plating, a process that deposits a very thin metallic coating in a vacuum. The attraction is the surface: light moving across a refined finish, adding richness to the frame’s lines.8

Transparency & sculptural volume

Blackfin Vitra

Vitra introduces a proprietary VitraCore polymer front with titanium components. Its bold transparent geometry opens another direction within Blackfin. It is a reminder to look at the actual construction of a frame, even when you know the brand’s signature material.9

Collection descriptions explain the maker’s broader range. They do not mean every model or collection is currently in stock at Bright Side. Construction and fitting options vary by design.

The Details That Make It Yours

Good fitting completes the design.

A frame you admire should also feel right when you look down at a book, turn toward a screen, or spend a long afternoon in it. We look at the whole pair on your face.

Bridge and nose-pad contact.

Many Blackfin designs provide adjustable nose pads. We check the contact and frame position, with attention to where the lenses sit in front of your eyes. The pad systems differ across models.5

Temples and balance.

Many frames use length-adjustable Swordfish temple tips. That is a fitting feature to explore with your optician, alongside width, temple position, and the balance of the finished lenses.2

Personal touches.

Blackfin offers engraving on eligible designs, and Aero Loop opens up choices in lens shape, sizing, and components. We confirm the options for your specific order.7

Why We Carry Blackfin

We love a frame that rewards attention.

Blackfin earns its place at Bright Side because we can have a meaningful conversation about its design and the way it wears. There is something to discover in the material, the shape, and the finish.

We want you to enjoy that discovery. A light metal frame can sharpen your look for work, bring an easy refinement to a simple outfit, or add a striking line that becomes part of your style. You do not have to know the collection names or the engineering to recognize a pair that feels right.

Our role is to help you find it. We consider the scale of the shape, how its color interacts with your coloring, and what your prescription needs. Then we make the fitting and lens choices part of the same thoughtful process.

That is why a curated optical matters. You get an introduction to a maker with a clear point of view—and someone who cares about translating that point of view into glasses you love.

Blackfin Questions, Answered

What to know before choosing a pair.

Where can I buy Blackfin glasses in Austin?

Bright Side Optical carries Blackfin in Austin. During Guided Eyewear Styling, we help you explore the shapes, colors, fit, and lens options that suit you. Ask about a specific model or collection so we can confirm current availability.

Where are Blackfin frames made?

Blackfin designs and manufactures its frames in Italy at its Black Shelter factory in the Dolomites. Its heritage is rooted in the Agordo area, where Maria Pramaor opened the family’s frame workshop in 1971.

Is Blackfin’s titanium Japanese or Italian?

Blackfin’s heritage story explains that it sources titanium from Japan and works it in Italy. The origin of the raw material and the place where the frame is manufactured are separate parts of the story.

Why are Blackfin glasses so lightweight?

Titanium lets Blackfin create strong frames with very little material, while beta-titanium supports flexible components in many designs. The weight of the complete pair also includes your prescription lenses, so we consider frame size and the lens plan together.

Are all Blackfin frames made entirely of titanium?

No. Blackfin is known for titanium, but construction varies by collection. Vitra, for example, uses a proprietary polymer front with titanium components. We explain the materials in the model you are considering.

Are Blackfin frames nickel-free?

Blackfin describes its pure titanium and beta-titanium as nickel-free and biocompatible. If material sensitivity is important to you, tell us so we can review the specific frame, finish, nose pads, and temple tips together.

Can Blackfin frames be adjusted for my face?

Yes. Many models offer adjustable nose pads and temple components, including the brand’s length-adjustable Swordfish temple tips. The fittings and adjustment options vary by design. We check the bridge contact, frame position, width, and temple fit on you.

Can I get prescription or progressive lenses in Blackfin glasses?

Yes, when the chosen frame and lens design are suitable for your prescription. We consider lens depth, size, frame position, and your visual tasks together. A light frame is a useful starting point; the finished glasses need a complete fitting and lens plan.

Can I personalize a Blackfin frame?

Some Blackfin designs offer engraving, and Aero Loop provides options for lens shapes and sizes, colors, bridge sizes, and temple designs. We confirm which choices are available for the model and order you are considering.

How much do Blackfin glasses cost?

Your total depends on the model, finish, prescription lenses, and any selected options. Bright Side provides a quote for the complete pair before you commit. Ask us about the current collection rather than relying on a single brand-wide price.
