What Is Morel Eyewear?

French roots.
Everyday pleasure.

Morel is an independent French eyewear company with a family history dating to 1880.3 Bright Side Optical carries Morel in Austin and helps you choose a frame with the right shape, fit, color, and lens plan for your life.

You may first notice a beautiful color or an easy shape. Then you put the frame on and realize how much you like the whole effect: your eyes, your expression, the way it works with what you are wearing.

We enjoy introducing Morel because that pleasure can be so immediate. The story gives you something more to appreciate once a pair has caught your eye.

It Began in the Jura

One family.
A habit of looking forward.

In the Jura, farmers once worked the land in warmer months and turned to making metal frames when snow arrived. In that tradition, Jules Morel made his first pince-nez in 1880, alongside agricultural work.1

It is a wonderfully tangible beginning. The story starts with hands, materials, and the seasons of a place.

Marius expanded production in the 1930s. Jacques helped take the name worldwide in the 1960s. The fourth generation is represented by Jérôme, Francis, and Amélie Morel.1

Each generation had a different task. That is part of what makes an enduring family company interesting: the next chapter has to be made, even when the name already has history.

A Small Signature with a Long View

Five lines, and a thought for the future.

Morel explains its temple-tip marking as five lines: the fourth is colored for the current generation, while the fifth looks toward the next.1 We love that a small detail can carry such a personal idea about continuity.

There is another little story behind the cat. In 1957, Jacques created a hallmark for gold-filled frames: an M topped by a cat’s head, the beginning of the Morel logo.1 When you know the story, a familiar mark becomes something worth looking at again.

From a Drawing to a Pair of Glasses

A sketch still needs someone’s hands.

Morel’s designers, colorists, and graphic artists work together on the designs. Its prototypist, Valérie Prillard—the first woman awarded Meilleur Ouvrier de France in eyewear—makes full-scale prototypes by hand from those sketches.2

That moment deserves attention. A drawing has to become an object with depth, weight, edges, and a bridge. Someone has to work out how the idea will feel in three dimensions.

It is easy to enjoy a finished frame without thinking about that journey. We like being able to share a little of it with you. When you turn a piece over, touch a detail, or notice the way a color meets the rim, the design becomes easier to appreciate.

Morel also describes its own quality laboratory, where a dedicated research and development team tests frames before they go to market.2 That work sits behind the visual pleasure of the collection.

The Morel Hinge

The useful detail can be the beautiful one.

Morel describes a patented hinge made without screws or welding, developed around a philosophy in which each element serves its function.2

A hinge may be small, but you use it every time you put your glasses away or unfold them in the morning. It is a good place to notice how an eyewear maker thinks.

At Bright Side, we show you the actual construction of the frame you are considering. You can feel how the temples open, look at the connection, and ask questions. The right explanation can make a quiet detail interesting.

Different Morel designs have different specifications. We confirm the hinge and materials of your chosen piece, then help you understand how it fits and feels.

Find Your Version of Morel

Refinement can have a little color in it.

The official optical range includes acetate, stainless steel, titanium, wood, and combination constructions.4 That gives us different ways to explore the effect you want.

A finer line can leave your expression more open. An acetate outline can give your face definition. A color along the brow may bring attention to your eyes or echo something you already love in your wardrobe.

You might want a versatile pair for work and weekends. You might want a little more warmth than your current glasses have. You might be surprised by how much you enjoy a shape you had never considered.

We look at those possibilities on you. The goal is a pair you can picture reaching for tomorrow morning, with a fit and lens plan that make that choice enjoyable every day.

Why Bright Side Carries Morel

A good optical should have stories worth sharing.

We choose independent eyewear because we want to introduce you to makers we can be excited about. Morel gives us family history, practical invention, and a wide enough design range to have a personal conversation.

A curated collection asks us to choose thoughtfully. We want to know what is interesting about a frame before we put it in your hands, and why it might be interesting to you.

Sometimes that means showing you an unexpectedly lovely color. Sometimes it means explaining a small construction detail. Sometimes it means recognizing that an easy, well-proportioned pair is exactly what you hoped to find.

Our stylists receive no individual sales commission. You have space to ask questions, compare, and decide how you feel. We want the pleasure of choosing to be part of the finished pair’s story, too.

Explore our Morel brand page, or come meet the collection through Guided Eyewear Styling.

A Pair You Will Live In

Good vision belongs with a good frame.

Choosing the frame and choosing the lenses are connected decisions. We consider your prescription, visual needs, and the frame’s dimensions and position on your face.

Tell us how you use your glasses. Your screen setup, reading, driving, and time outside all help us understand what you need the finished pair to do.

For personalized progressives, Bright Side uses Optikam measurements as part of the fitting process. Learn how frame wrap, back vertex distance, and pantoscopic tilt inform lens personalization in why some progressive lenses cost more than others.

The long history is a lovely reason to become curious about Morel. The complete pair we plan with you is the reason to enjoy wearing it.
