What Is l.a.Eyeworks?

A Los Angeles original.
A very personal choice.

l.a.Eyeworks is an independent eyewear design house founded in Los Angeles in 1979 by opticians Barbara McReynolds and Gai Gherardi. It is known for inventive color, distinctive shapes, and limited-edition frames.1 Bright Side Optical carries l.a.Eyeworks in Austin and helps you find the design, fit, and lenses that belong together.

You can appreciate a frame as an object. The real discovery happens when you put it on. A line lifts your eyes. A color makes your complexion look more alive. A pattern gives a familiar outfit a little spark.

That is why this collection is so much fun to explore with someone who knows how to look. You bring the face, the personality, and the life the glasses need to fit. We help you see the possibilities.

Two Friends with an Eye for People

The story starts with opticians.

Barbara and Gai were friends before they became business partners. In Gai’s own account, an early job in a California optical shop introduced her to the pleasure of choosing a frame and connecting with the person wearing it. Years of working in optical shops followed.

In 1979, they opened on Melrose Avenue. Gai remembers a space that became their workshop with help from family and neighbors. They experimented with existing frames before introducing their first original design, BEAT, in 1981.2

We love that the story begins at the dispensing table: with someone’s face, someone’s prescription, and the question of what would make that person happy.

It gives the brand’s creative spirit a wonderfully human starting point. An unexpected design still has to become someone’s glasses. A clever color still has to feel right when that person looks in the mirror.

At Bright Side, that relationship is the part we care about most. The design opens the conversation. Getting to know you gives it direction.

The Pleasure Is in the Possibilities

Color can feel surprisingly natural.

Look at the frame here. Its outline feels approachable; the amber and reddish pattern gives it something extra. You can imagine how that warmth might echo a person’s hair, pick up a color in their wardrobe, or bring more life to their face.

Then look back at our client’s blue patterned pair. A different color, a different outline, a completely different mood. The delight is visible in the whole face.

We help you compare those effects. A frame can make your eyes the center of attention, bring definition to soft features, or add a welcome bit of play to the way you dress. The useful question is: how do you feel wearing it?

The official collection spans several shapes, sizes, and color families.4 You do not need to arrive with a plan to wear the boldest pair in the room. You only need a little curiosity.

Designed in Los Angeles

There is care behind the color.

l.a.Eyeworks begins its designs with hand-drawn sketches.1 The frames are made in Italy and Japan, using acetate and metal, with modern manufacturing techniques and hand finishing. The founders’ optical background informs fit and proportion.3

Those choices matter when a frame becomes part of your morning routine. You touch it, adjust it, clean it, and look through it for hours. The pleasure needs to extend beyond the first photograph.

At Bright Side, we explore the actual piece with you. How does the bridge sit? Where do your eyes fall inside the lenses? Does the scale suit your face and prescription? Does the frame feel good when you move?

Limited-edition production is part of the brand’s approach.1 If a particular color catches your eye, tell us. We confirm availability for the frame you want to consider.

A Small Detail with a Good Story

Yes, those are “frog toes.”

Certain temple ends have rounded pads for comfort behind the ears. Their inspiration? Gai’s Australian green tree frogs.3 It is a lovely little example of the brand’s curiosity: an everyday detail with an unexpected beginning.

A Face Is Worth Looking At

Art has always been part of the conversation.

“A face is like a work of art. It deserves a great frame.”

— l.a.Eyeworks1

The brand’s connection to art goes well beyond a beautiful frame. Its world includes commissioned artist cleaning cloths and a long-running portrait campaign photographed by Greg Gorman, begun in 1981.1

Its official gallery is worth a visit: portraits and artist projects that give the glasses a living, imaginative context.5

That famous line is also a lovely way to think about choosing your own pair. Your face has its own expression, history, and character. A frame gives you another way to enjoy it.

When we style you, we pay attention to the person who shows up in the mirror. Sometimes you smile before you say anything. Sometimes you need a moment. We want you to have enough time to recognize what you love.

Why Bright Side Carries l.a.Eyeworks

We want you to enjoy being seen.

Carrying an independent collection like l.a.Eyeworks means having a point of view. We choose frames we are excited to put in your hands, and we enjoy introducing a shape or color you might have walked past on your own.

That takes a little courage from us, too. A curated optical should give you something worth discovering. We want to show you a frame and be able to explain what makes it interesting—and why we thought of you.

You might be stepping into a new role, rediscovering your style, or simply ready to love an object you use every day. We ask about those things because the answer helps us choose well.

The collection offers a delightful starting point. The styling conversation makes the choice personal. Our job is to help you leave with a pair you are excited to reach for.

A Complete Pair Deserves Complete Attention

Love the look.
Plan the vision.

A beautiful frame deserves lenses chosen with the same attention. We consider your prescription, the frame’s size and position, and how you use your glasses before recommending a lens plan.

If you are choosing personalized progressives, Bright Side uses Optikam to take measurements, including frame wrap, back vertex distance, and pantoscopic tilt. Learn how those details inform lens personalization in why some progressive lenses cost more than others.

Tell us about your desk, your driving, your reading, and the moments when your current glasses fall short. Those details help us make the frame and lenses work together.
