Peeling, crazing, and cloudiness are different clues to the same problem: the lens surface is no longer intact.

A coating can fail from heat, age, chemical exposure, manufacturing stress, or repeated improper cleaning. Once you know what the damage looks like, you can stop trying to clean away something that cannot be cleaned.

The Short Answer

If the haze will not clean away, the coating may be damaged rather than dirty.

Modern lenses are often a stack of carefully bonded layers: lens material, scratch-resistant hard coat, anti-reflective layers, and water- or oil-repellent top coats. When one layer cracks, separates, or wears unevenly, the surface can look cloudy, iridescent, scratched, or as though a clear film is peeling.

True coating failure is normally permanent. Cleaning harder, polishing the lens, or using household chemicals can make it worse.

Recognize the Pattern

What peeling, crazing, and cloudiness usually look like.

Crazing

A web of very fine lines becomes visible in reflected light. Vision may seem smeared, especially around lights at night.

Peeling or delamination

Irregular patches, edges, or islands appear where layers have separated. The damaged area may reflect a different color.

Permanent cloudiness

The lens stays hazy after correct washing and drying. Fine scratches or widespread coating wear can scatter light.

Normal smudging

Fingerprints and skin oils move or disappear with proper cleaning. Surface damage remains fixed in the same place.

The Biggest Trigger

Heat can make the lens and its coatings expand at different rates.

Dashboards, closed cars, ovens, grills, fireplaces, hair dryers, steam, and very hot water can expose lenses to damaging temperatures. Rapid changes—from a hot environment into cold air, for example—can add stress.

Never leave glasses in a parked car. Use lukewarm water for cleaning, and remove glasses before opening a hot oven or leaning over strong steam.

Other Causes

Age, chemicals, abrasion, and manufacturing variables can contribute.

Harsh household glass cleaners, ammonia, acetone, abrasive paper products, dirty cloths, salt, dust, and repeated dry wiping can weaken or abrade the surface. Hairspray and sunscreen residue should be rinsed away rather than rubbed into the lens.

Some failures are not caused by the wearer. Adhesion, curing, lens preparation, material compatibility, and production stress also matter—which is why a good coating warranty is valuable.

Can It Be Fixed?

A damaged coating is not something we recommend stripping or polishing at home.

Removing only the damaged layer uniformly—without changing the prescription surface or optical quality—is not a dependable consumer repair. If the coating has failed, lens replacement is usually the clear, predictable answer.

Simple habits make the greatest difference.

Rinse before wiping

Use lukewarm water to float away grit. A tiny drop of lotion-free dish soap can remove oils when the lens maker permits it.

Use a clean microfiber cloth

Wash the cloth regularly without fabric softener. A dirty cloth can redistribute oil and abrasive particles.

Avoid extreme heat

Store glasses in a case away from dashboards, ovens, steam, and direct blasts from hot appliances.

Ask about the warranty

Understand the coating warranty and care instructions when ordering, then keep your receipt.

Why does my eyeglass coating look cracked?
