A coating can fail from heat, age, chemical exposure, manufacturing stress, or repeated improper cleaning. Once you know what the damage looks like, you can stop trying to clean away something that cannot be cleaned.
The Short Answer
Modern lenses are often a stack of carefully bonded layers: lens material, scratch-resistant hard coat, anti-reflective layers, and water- or oil-repellent top coats. When one layer cracks, separates, or wears unevenly, the surface can look cloudy, iridescent, scratched, or as though a clear film is peeling.
True coating failure is normally permanent. Cleaning harder, polishing the lens, or using household chemicals can make it worse.
Recognize the Pattern

Harsh household glass cleaners, ammonia, acetone, abrasive paper products, dirty cloths, salt, dust, and repeated dry wiping can weaken or abrade the surface. Hairspray and sunscreen residue should be rinsed away rather than rubbed into the lens.
Some failures are not caused by the wearer. Adhesion, curing, lens preparation, material compatibility, and production stress also matter—which is why a good coating warranty is valuable.
Can It Be Fixed?
Removing only the damaged layer uniformly—without changing the prescription surface or optical quality—is not a dependable consumer repair. If the coating has failed, lens replacement is usually the clear, predictable answer.
Protect the Next Pair
Use lukewarm water to float away grit. A tiny drop of lotion-free dish soap can remove oils when the lens maker permits it.
Wash the cloth regularly without fabric softener. A dirty cloth can redistribute oil and abrasive particles.
Store glasses in a case away from dashboards, ovens, steam, and direct blasts from hot appliances.
