How sunglasses work—and what the labels actually mean.

A dark lens, UV protection, polarization, lens color, and coatings each perform a different job. Knowing the difference helps you choose sunglasses for comfort, clarity, protection, and real life.

The Short Answer

Good sunglasses manage more than brightness.

They should filter ultraviolet radiation, reduce uncomfortable visible light, support useful contrast, and fit securely enough to provide consistent coverage.

Polarization and performance coatings can add glare control, clarity, durability, and easier maintenance—but they are not substitutes for UV protection.

Four Different Jobs

Do not confuse darkness with protection.

UV protection

Look for UV400 or 99–100% UVA and UVB protection. This is the protective foundation, whether the lens is light or dark.

Visible-light control

Tint darkness determines how much visible light reaches your eyes and should match the brightness of the environment.

Polarization

A polarizing filter reduces reflected glare from horizontal surfaces such as roads, water, and vehicle hoods.

Lens color

Gray, brown, amber, green, and other colors change color balance and perceived contrast in different ways.

Back-surface protection

An anti-reflective treatment on the back can reduce light reflecting into your eyes from behind the lens.

Surface coatings

Scratch-resistant, hydrophobic, and oleophobic treatments improve durability and make lenses easier to keep clean.

Polarization

Why glare feels different from ordinary brightness.

Light reflected from a flat surface becomes strongly oriented in one direction. A polarized lens filters much of that reflected glare, which can improve comfort and apparent contrast around water, pavement, and snow.

Polarization does not automatically mean UV protection, and it is not ideal for every task. Certain dashboards, phones, and other screens may look dark or patterned through polarized lenses at some angles.

Choosing a Lens Color

Color changes the view—not only the look.

Gray

Reduces brightness while keeping color relationships relatively neutral. A versatile choice for strong sun.

Brown or amber

Can enhance perceived contrast and depth, making it popular for driving and variable outdoor conditions.

Green

Offers a balanced view with comfortable contrast and less color shift than some warmer tints.

Fashion colors

Can be beautiful and useful in specific light, but tint density and UV performance still need to match the intended activity.

Prescription Sunglasses

Your prescription, frame, and lens design still have to work together.

Strong prescriptions, progressives, high-wrap frames, and sport designs may need specialized measurements or lens designs. Choose the sunglass frame with the prescription in mind—not after the fact.

A Practical Checklist

What to look for before you buy.

Confirm full UVA and UVB protection. Choose tint darkness and color for the conditions where you will wear them. Add polarization when reflected glare is a real problem. Check coverage from the front and sides, bridge stability, temple comfort, and compatibility with your prescription.

Does a darker sunglass lens provide more UV protection?
